INDICATOR 7.4.
7.4.1. Local Community Outreach for Energy Efficiency
In the 3rd quarter of 2024, NEMSU Bislig Campus successfully launched Project RADIANCE, an extension service initiative aimed at promoting solar energy education and raising awareness about sustainable energy solutions within the local community. Facilitators led an engaging and interactive session, which included informative discussions on renewable energy and hands-on demonstrations of how to create DIY solar lamps. This practical activity not only provided participants with valuable knowledge about solar technology but also fostered a sense of environmental responsibility and support for sustainable energy practices.
7.4.2. 100% Renewable Energy Pledge
North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) demonstrates its strong commitment to sustainable energy transformation through its Sustainability Policy, particularly articulated under Guiding Principle No. 3: Environmental Stewardship and Resilience (p. 3). This principle embodies the University’s pledge to champion the transition toward 100% renewable energy not only within its campuses but also in the broader community.
Grounded in the ethic of environmental responsibility, NEMSU recognizes its vital role in caring for the planet—our common home. The University is deeply committed to protecting and enhancing the environment through all aspects of its campus operations, research, and extension engagements. This commitment is operationalized by adopting the precautionary principle in managing natural resources, minimizing waste and pollution, and mitigating climate impacts through the promotion of renewable and clean energy systems.
As stated in the policy, NEMSU’s campuses serve as living laboratories for sustainability, exemplifying practices such as:
Energy efficiency and conservation measures to reduce carbon footprint,
Integration of renewable energy technologies, such as solar and other clean energy systems,
Water and waste management innovations, and
Promotion of green architecture that supports eco-friendly learning environments.
Furthermore, NEMSU’s commitment extends beyond institutional boundaries. Through its public pledge to renewable energy adoption, the University promotes awareness and collaboration with local government units, partner agencies, and communities to advocate for renewable energy use at the regional level. This proactive stance supports the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
In a region highly vulnerable to natural hazards, NEMSU’s renewable energy initiatives are not only about environmental protection but also about building resilience and self-sufficiency. By modeling sustainability practices and integrating clean energy solutions in its academic and operational systems, NEMSU fosters a culture of climate consciousness, innovation, and collective responsibility—leading the charge toward a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Caraga region and beyond.
