2.2.1. Campus Food Waste Tracking
NEMSU FOOD WASTE TRACKING
To promote sustainable consumption and responsible resource management, the North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) initiated a systematic food waste monitoring activity across its seven campuses in 2024. The data collection aimed to quantify the amount of food waste generated within the university’s food service operations, such as canteens and cafeterias, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and the university’s Sustainability Policy under the pillar of Sustainable Campus Operations.
The results provide an overview of NEMSU’s estimated monthly and annual food waste generation for 2024, serving as a baseline for future monitoring and reduction strategies. This data-driven approach enables the university to design interventions such as improved meal planning, portion control, food redistribution, and composting programs to minimize waste and promote sustainability across all campuses.
The total estimated food waste across all NEMSU campuses for 2024 amounted to approximately 1,078.7 kilograms, with Tandag, Cantilan, and Lianga campuses contributing the most due to their larger student populations. The data underscores NEMSU’s proactive stance in addressing food waste and its alignment with global sustainability standards. Moving forward, the university aims to strengthen its waste reduction strategies and integrate food waste tracking as part of its regular sustainability monitoring and reporting system.
