14.3.2. Food from Aquatic Ecosystems (Policies)
North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) ensures that all food sourced from aquatic ecosystems is sustainably harvested, as stipulated on page 8 of the University’s Sustainability Policy under the strategic pillar of Climate-Smart Agriculture and Biodiversity Conservation – Building Resilience in Food Systems and Ecosystems.
Recognizing that the Caraga Region’s economy heavily depends on agriculture, fisheries, and natural resources, NEMSU prioritizes sustainable food production and responsible ecosystem management in the face of climate change. Under this policy, the University commits to:
Developing and promoting climate-smart agriculture practices among local farmers and fisherfolk;
Supporting sustainable aquaculture and fisheries management, ensuring that aquatic resources used in campus food services are sourced responsibly;
Conducting research and extension programs to enhance productivity and ecosystem resilience; and
Providing training for coastal communities on sustainable livelihood strategies such as Caulerpa (seaweed) farming, which balances income generation with marine biodiversity protection.
Through this institutional policy, NEMSU upholds its dedication to sustainable food systems, aligning its initiatives with SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
