17.4.1. Education for SDGs Commitment to Meaningful Education
Anchored on Memorandum from the Office of the President No. 09-018, s. 2024, North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) has formally adopted its new vision and mission that strengthen its commitment to research, innovation, and sustainability. The University envisions itself as:
“A Research University advancing technology and innovation for sustainable development”
reflecting its dedication to academic excellence, high-impact research, and community engagement for the benefit of present and future generations.
Its mission:
“We drive sustainable development through quality instruction, innovative research, community collaboration, and technological advancement”
serves as a roadmap to provide meaningful education, generate solutions to real-world challenges, and align institutional priorities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this renewed vision and mission, NEMSU reaffirms its pledge to nurture empowered learners, foster sustainable innovations, and contribute to a more equitable and resilient society.
17.4.2. Education for SDGs: Specific Courses on Sustainability
North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) embeds the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its graduate curricula by offering specialized courses across various programs. In the Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education (PhD-SciEd), the subject Environmental Planning and Management for Sustainable Development trains scholars to design, evaluate, and implement sustainable policies and practices. The Master of Science in Teaching Science (MST-Sci) includes Environmental and Conservation Education, fostering environmental awareness and stewardship in science education. Meanwhile, the Master of Arts in Social Science Teaching (MA-SST) offers Gender, Race & Inequalities, a subject that critically examines social structures and advances equity and inclusion. Through these academic offerings, NEMSU ensures that graduate students acquire the competencies to champion sustainability, social responsibility, and meaningful education aligned with the SDGs.
17.4.3. Education for SDGs in the Wider Community
In the 3rd quarter of 2024, the NEMSU Bislig Campus carried out Project RADIANCE, one of its extension services and linkages, following the signing of its Memorandum of Agreement. The project aimed to promote solar energy education and strengthen community awareness on sustainable energy solutions. To achieve this, facilitators led an engaging session that included interactive discussions on renewable energy and a demonstration on how to create DIY solar lamps. As a result, participants actively took part in the hands-on activities, gaining practical knowledge and skills in solar technology while fostering environmental consciousness and support for renewable energy practices.
17.4.4. Sustainability Literacy
North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) integrates sustainability literacy into its graduate programs by embedding it in the comprehensive examinations of select degree offerings. In the Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education (PhD-SciEd), students are evaluated on courses such as Environmental Planning and Management for Sustainable Development, while in the Master of Arts in Social Science Teaching (MA-SST), examinations cover Gender, Race & Inequalities. These assessments ensure that graduate students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also demonstrate mastery of concepts that advance sustainability, equity, and social responsibility.
