INDICATOR 14.4.
INDICATOR 14.4.
14.4.1. Water Discharge Guidelines and Standards
North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) strictly adheres to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order No. 2016-08, also known as the Water Quality Guidelines and General Effluent Standards of 2016. This directive establishes the national framework for maintaining and protecting water quality across various bodies of water.
Through this compliance, NEMSU ensures that all wastewater and effluent discharges from its campuses meet the prescribed environmental standards to prevent water pollution, safeguard ecosystems, and protect both wildlife and human health. The University aligns its environmental management practices with this national policy, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and responsible campus operations.
14.4.2. Action Plan to Reducing Plastic Waste
North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) has established a clear and comprehensive action plan to reduce plastic waste across all its campuses, aligning with its institutional commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible resource management.
As stipulated in the Memorandum from the President No. 08-003, s. 2024 under the Austerity Measures of NEMSU, the University explicitly mandates the reduction of single-use plastics in all university operations. This directive encourages students, faculty, and staff to adopt reusable and eco-friendly alternatives, promoting behavioral change toward sustainability and reducing the ecological footprint of campus activities.
Complementing this policy, the NEMSU Sustainability Policy (page 5) under Sustainable Campus Operations outlines a key objective to strengthen sustainable waste management through reduce-reuse-recycle programs, proper waste segregation, and minimization of single-use plastics. Furthermore, the University commits to establishing systems that will significantly cut waste sent to landfills and prevent pollution of air and water, ensuring that its waste management practices are both environmentally sound and socially responsible.
14.4.3. Reducing Marine Pollution (Policy)
Under Objective B (p. 5) of the Sustainable Campus Operations in the NEMSU Sustainability Policy, the University commits to strengthening sustainable waste management through reduce-reuse-recycle programs, proper waste segregation, and minimizing single-use plastics across all campuses (supporting SDG 12). These efforts are designed to establish systematic waste reduction practices that significantly lessen landfill contributions and prevent pollution of air and water systems, including those that lead to marine environments.
